Marae

           Otakou marae whare runanga
              Marae study
What is in the newspaper about a marae?
A marae is a special place for the Maori. It’s a place where the culture can be celebrated, where costumes can be explored and debated, where family occasions such as birthdays can be held, and where important ceremonies, such as welcoming the visitors or farewelling the dead (tangihanga), can be performed. Maori see a Marae as a home.It is there turangawaewae (standing), a place where they know they belong and where they are from.

About a Marae in my own words.

Describing the Marae.
A Marae has a lot of carvings around it and there is a gate with carvings on it also. Inside a marae most of them have pictures of story’s well that’s what was in the marae I when to with some of the school.

What you do in a marae.
In marae’s you start off by waiting at the gate then someone will come out and greet you into the there marae. Once they greet you in they'll offer you a seat and you will just stand there and wait until they tell you to enoho ( sit ). Once you sit quietly the people will talk to you in maori of course because it’s a marae. After they speak they will offer you kai ( food ), and a drink. Next when  you finish you’re kai and juice or water you will say you’re mihi.
